Design a series of 15 symbols, using simplified graphic forms, to tell the story of one day in your life. You may select your own topic/story, but obtain instructor’s approval before you finalize your selection.

Only use black and white in the beginning. You may convert to color and refine with style later.

Objectives

• Learn and practice the basics of symbol design
• Explore form reduction as the methodology
• Clearly communicate the intended meaning of a symbol
• Consistent in the use of visual element, design principles, and overall concept
• Explore the use of negative space

Process

You must follow the design process, show your progress at each class, and document your design process carefully to show that the symbols are your original work.

Collect existing symbols related to your topic. Different approaches and styles are preferred. A minimum of 12 sets of symbols are required.

Create a list of things you do in a normal day (not some special days), then select 15 activities. If you choose other options, you shall come up at least 20 activities first and later narrow down to 15.

Visualize by sketching out all activities. Brainstorm how to present your symbols while you are developing them.

Revise and redesign after critiques.

Select the best roughs to refine on computer or other means.

Organize your final set of symbols into a presentation.
