Pathos can best be described as emotional. Pathos relies on what is essentially emotional manipulation. This can happen in a variety of ways, as humans are multifaceted and empathetic creatures. This can be done through, for example, the display of tragic photos, like the How the Other Half Lives<\/em> series. The photos show American poverty at its worst and evoke a strong emotional reaction, which had a major impact in American regulation of industry and housing. Obviously, there are aspects of ethos in this (we have to believe that the photos are credible), but barring the most skeptical of people, most people would find those photos disturbing and would feel some sort of emotion. Of course, not all emotions have to be sadness or pity; they can be a wide range of things. The most common emotion in the modern world when it comes to the use of pathos is definitely outrage and anger. Politicians and activists commonly utilize blind outrage and anger to get what they want. Pathos gives them the ability to raise de facto armies of citizens in support of their beliefs and ideologies. So, pathos is just emotional manipulation.
